1A West Region playoff bracket set | Local Sports | times-news.com
The Maryland Class 1A West Region playoff brackets have been set, with a rematch between Fort Hill and Allegany headlining the first-round action.
Fort Hill, which holds a 7-2 record on the field, has officially been dropped to 2-7 after forfeiting five games for playing an ineligible player.
The school appealed the decision to the state, but there was not enough time to hear it before the bracket was finalized, dropping the Sentinels to the No. 6 seed.
Fort Hill has 30 days to appeal the forfeited regular-season wins, but the appeal will have no impact on the playoffs.
One of those forfeits is credited as a win for Mountain Ridge, which improves to 6-3 and moves into the No. 1 spot in the region, followed by Clear Spring (6-3), Allegany (4-5), Northern (4-5) and Southern (3-6).
The two bottom seeds, Hancock (3-6) and Smithsburg (0-9), have dropped out of the playoffs, giving Mountain Ridge and Clear Spring first-round byes.
Fort Hill routed Allegany, 39-0, on Saturday in Homcoming. The rematch is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
The winner will face Clear Spring on the road the following week.
The region's other opening-round game is also a rematch from the last week of the regular season. No. 4 Northern welcomes No. 5 Southern, with the winner heading to Mountain Ridge in the next round.
Northern defeated Southern, 44-0, on Friday night.
