LOCAL NEWS

For the May luncheon at Capital City Country Club, the Network of Entrepreneurs and Business Advocates (NEBA) will host state Sen. Corey Simon (R-3 and Rep. Allison Tant (D-9) who will share their thoughts on the recently completed legislative session. Please note this forum is on May 30th, the last Tuesday of May, instead of our regular fourth Tuesday. Member lunches are $25. Non-member lunches are $35. The doors open at 11:30 a.m.

The man arrested on numerous drug and weapons charges at Tom Brown Park before law enforcement was ambushed appeared in court and was denied bond on Saturday morning. The State Attorney's Office filed a notice to seek harsher penalties in this case, arguing the man is a habitual felony offender. According documents, the man was already known to TPD's General Narcotics Unit as someone who was believed to be distributing multiple kinds of illegal drugs.

One person was seriously injured after a shooting at the Briarwood Manor Apartments at the 4400 block of Shelfer Road on Saturday night. Upon officers’ arrival, they found a victim with a gunshot wound to his lower body. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries but non-life threatening. The investigation remains open and active.

FLORIDA NEWS

After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation last year, the Florida State Guard's budget will grow to ten times its current size and will become a permanent part of Florida's budget. FSG's personnel from the current 400 to 1,500 personnel and the budget from $10 million to $107.6 million. The ACLU Florida said the move makes Florida more like a police state.

Florida Gov. DeSantis is also reinvigorating critiques about the military saying "political ideologies" are keeping America's warriors from enlisting in the Armed Services. "I see a lot of emphasis now on political ideologies, things like gender pronouns. I see a lot about things like DEI, and I think that that's caused recruiting to plummet. I think it's driven off a lot of warriors, and I think morale is low," DeSantis said.

SPORTS NEWS

FAMU baseball won the SWAC Championship and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. They are the No. 4 seed in the Gainesville Regional. UCONN and Texas Tech are the other two seeds in the regional. The Rattlers-Gators game will be this Friday at 6:30 p.m.

FSU softball defeated the Georgia Bulldogs in the Tallahassee Super Regional and punched their ticket to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. The Noles will take on No. 6 Oklahoma State Thursday night at 7 p.m. eastern on ESPN. The Seminoles are making their 12th appearance in the Women's College World Series. The past two times the Seminoles have been in Oklahoma City, they have reached the Championship Series as they won the title in 2018 and were the national runner-up in 2021.
