Sports briefs: Tam, Redwood set for field hockey final
Sophomore Claire Johnson scored twice to lift the Redwood High field hockey team past University, 2-1, in Wednesday’s MCAL semifinals. Top-seeded Tam got two goals from Rowie Scobie in the fourth quarter to rally past No. 4 seed Marin Catholic 3-2 in the other semifinal.
Emi Navesi scored the first goal for the Red-tailed Hawks, who enjoyed a season of firsts. Tam had never beaten MC before this season but has now done so three times. Wednesday also marked the first time Tam has won a postseason game.
The Red-tailed Hawks (14-2-1) will host the championship game at 4 p.m. on Friday against Redwood (13-2-2). The Giants have won the past five MCAL titles, having beaten University 3-2 last season.
Tam won the first meeting this season against Redwood 2-0 on Sept. 10 before the two teams battled to a 0-0 stalemate on Oct. 4.
Katie Murphy had 20 kills and three blocks and Maddie Booth added 24 digs to lead Marin Academy to a 25-20, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19 victory over Convent in the Bay Counties League West semifinals on Wednesday.
Muriel Harris added eight kills and six blocks for MA (17-10), which advances to the Saturday’s title game against University. Ellie Yasuda added 26 assist for the Wildcats.
Jordan Marotto topped Maya Riisgaard, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles as Redwood went unbeaten in league following a 6-1 win against Tam on Wednesday. The Giants (16-0), who also got singles wins from Julia Povio and Julia Laury, will get a first-round bye and host a semifinal on Thursday.
Siena Moglen got the lone win at No. 2 singles for Tam (12-4), which opens the MCAL playoffs as the No. 3 seed.
Marin Catholic tight end/defensive end Jordan Rogers announced via social media that he is committing to play for UC Davis next season. UC Davis already features a number of former Marin Catholic standouts on its roster, including Michael Ingrassia, Matteo Perez, Gaven Cooke, Greer Arthur, and Trent Carrade.
Vincent Krilanovich and Jake Carrera each scored three goals to lead Archie Williams past host Marin Academy, 13-5, on Wednesday to finish the regular season undefeated against MCAL foes.
The Peregrine Falcons (19-2, 8-0 MCAL) wrapped up the top seed in the MCAL tournament, with an earlier win over second-place Redwood (21-2, 7-1). Archie Williams has one final tuneup against Miramonte in a non-league game on Thursday.
The Wildcats (13-6, 5-3) got four goals from Matthew Giaque. Goaltender Lachlan Baldauf scored on a full-length shot that landed in the net. Marin Academy is scheduled to finish the regular season against non-league opponent Cardinal Newman on Friday.
Holly Hovey fired up the Archie Williams High attack, and Elsa Kastner scored the winning goal with 12 seconds left to play as the Peregrine Falcons edged host Marin Academy, 8-7, Wednesday to secure the top seed for the MCAL playoffs.
Kastner’s shot went high and bounced off the hands of Wildcats goaltender Caroline Starrett, but the ball fell behind Starrett for the deciding goal. Hovey finished with a team-high four goals for the Falcons (16-3, 9-0 MCAL).
Hannah Reichley and Kelly Kurtzig each scored two goals for Marin Academy (18-5, 8-1), which took a 4-1 lead early in the second period. Hovey rallied the Falcons with two goals to tie the score going into halftime.
The top six teams advance to the MCAL playoffs, which begin Tuesday at Archie Williams.
