CANFIELD — The Canfield Historical Society and the Canfield Christian Church will join forces Thursday to present a video that was made to celebrate Canfield Schools’ 200th year in 2001.

The event will start at the Bond House, 44 W. Main St., for refreshments provided by the church, then will proceed across the street to the Canfield Public Library, 43 W. Main St., for the film and for guests to see the vintage yearbooks and photos.

Canfield Historical Society Curator Laura Zeh said the idea came from Sally Iffel, who is a member of the society and Canfield Christian Church.

“Why can’t we show that film (again),” Iffel said.

That was the spark that started the event. The church got behind it and will help with the refreshments.

The movie will highlight all 200 years of Canfield schools, from the first session in 1801, to the formation of 10 districts with one-room schoolhouses. Zeh said she researched it and found that teachers were paid a whopping $1.50 per day in the 1820s, and were often offered room and board with families.

“Many don’t know there were two Canfield Board of Educations back then,” Zeh said. “There was the Canfield Rural BOE and the Canfield Village BOE for the Borough School in town.”

Another interesting fact was the levy passed in 1916 was to build a new school with “indoor toilets.” The levy of an unknown amount passed in 1916, but the new school didn’t break ground until 1920 because of federal regulations forbidding the building of any new structures because of World War I.

That building opened in 1922, and is what the current Canfield Board of Education hopes to pass a levy to replace.

One other item Zeh presented of interest involved early sports teams.

“Canfield has promoted school sports for much of its history,” she said. “In 1914, the high school track team took home the county trophy cup. Both the girls and boys basketball teams were county champions in 1929.”

As for the society’s yearbook collection, Zeh said she has every one from 1923 to 1977 except for 1973 and 1974. She hopes someone will contribute those dates to make for a complete collection.

She said the movie on the district’s 200 years was originally made by the school district for the 200th anniversary celebration in 2001.

The event at the Bond House at 5 p.m. for refreshments, and the movie and yearbook display at the library are free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated. No reservations are required. The movie will start at 6 p.m.
