Waukomis set to host Webbers Falls in the first round | Sports | enidnews.com
Waukomis' Ethan Brueggemann runs the ball against Cherokee Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, at Waukomis High School.
WAUKOMIS — Waukomis coach Rustin Donaldson said the players, coaches and the community are excited to host a playoff game for the first time since 2016.
“It’s awesome,” Donaldson said. “I think as excited as we were and are, there is still work to do, and our guys understand that.”
Waukomis will turn its attention to the first round of the playoffs, and it will take on Webbers Falls at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, at Waukomis High School in Waukomis, Okla.
Webbers Falls finished 6-4 on the season, and it averages 33.2 points per game and gives up 22.7 points per game.
Waukomis finished 8-2 on the season, and it averages 45.2 points per game and gives up 19.6 points per game.
For Webbers Falls’ offense, coach Trent Holt said their main focus is establishing a rushing attack.
“We like to run the football,” Holt said. “Our tailback is a pretty good-sized kid. We’ve thrown it OK all year. Our quarterback is a small kid, so he has some problems seeing the entire field.”
Donaldson echoed a similar statement about Webbers Falls’ offense.
“They are big up front, with some big running backs,” Donaldson said. “They just want to run right at you. Big, physical guys. They’re going to try to establish the line of scrimmage.”
Waukomis’ defense turned it up a notch in last week’s win over Cherokee, giving up zero points in the second half. Donaldson said each player has to do their job in the playoffs.
“In the second half, we did a better job of settling in and doing that,” Donaldson said. “That was really great to see.”
Waukomis will look to get Mehsyn Phelan and Ethan Brueggemann going in the running game. The duo combined to collect four rushing touchdowns in the win over Cherokee.
“Those two all year long have switched off at running back,” Donaldson said. “Just to keep them fresh.”
Holt said tackling is imperative for Webbers Falls on defense.
“We definitely have to tackle, and we have to set an edge,” Holt said. “We have to be able to stop the counter and those jet sweeps.”
Three seniors are a part of this year’s Waukomis team. Donaldson said it’s nice that these seniors get the opportunity to play in front of the home crowd in the playoffs.
“I think in their first season of high school, they didn’t win a game,” Donaldson said. “To go from that to where they’re at now, I’m so proud of them. There are only three of them, and each one has played a role in our success.”
