Notebook: Super 7 QBs list set; San Diego teams make summer plans; girls flag football on Fridays?

May 12, 2023

Champions have been crowned, trophies are on the shelves and awards have been doled out. The high school spring sports season is now history.

But don't relax, it's just a little over six weeks until prep football practice opens. Games start Aug. 18.

And the summer will be filled with footballs.

Action kicked off with the Super 7 Elite Quarterback Competition, the brainchild of Carlsbad High School coach Thadd MacNeal and QB guru Jose Mohler.

A free event, the Super 7 is designed to get a look at the top 40 quarterbacks in the area.

"I have a history with quarterbacks, and college coaches call and ask for recommendations," said MacNeal, who has sent dozens of quarterbacks on to play at colleges. "The Super 7 is a quarterback competition, but it's also designed to find that overlooked kid, the kid we can recommend to a college.

"We start with 40, narrow that down to 10 and finally the Super 7."

Here are this year's Super 7, with comments from MacNeal:

Julian Sayin, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Carlsbad

The summer is full of 7-on-7 passing tournaments, events designed as much for team bonding as results.

One of the best 7-on-7 tournaments is at La Costa Canyon High School on July 15, usually signaling the end of the summer season.

The 16-team tournament features host La Costa Canyon, Fallbrook, Otay Ranch, El Capitan, Rancho Bernardo, St. Augustine. Ramona, Westview, West Hills, Del Norte, Mt. Carmel, Vista, Poway, Steele Canyon, Oceanside and San Juan Capistrano San Juan Hills.

San Diego State hosts two weekends of 7-on-7 featuring several out-of-town teams. The feature bracket this weekend includes Lincoln, Long Beach Poly, West Hills Chaminade and Upland.

Next weekend has several big brackets, including Lincoln; Peoria (Ariz.) Liberty; Los Alamitos; Rancho Cucamonga; St. Augustine, Chatsworth Sierra Canyon; Phoenix Pinnacle; Mission Hills, Temescal Canyon; Anaheim Troy; Cathedral Catholic; Garden Grove Pacifica; Vail (Ariz.) Mica Mountain and Mount Miguel.

La Costa Canyon will travel to San Luis Obispo for a tournament.

Cathedral Catholic is in the Edison Battle at the Beach.

Carlsbad is entered in an event sponsored by the Los Angeles Chargers as well as the Elite 8 at St. John Bosco, perhaps the most-prestigious competition of the summer.

There are several interesting games on the 2023 nine against out-of-state teams.

Cathedral Catholic plays Phoenix Brophy Prep and Las Vegas Liberty; Helix plays Mesa (Ariz.) Red Mountain, Eastlake hosts Hammond (Ind.) Central; Olympian hosts Goodyear (Ariz.) Trivium Prep; Santa Fe Christian plays Chicago Hope Academy; University City meets Trinity Valley (Texas); Carlsbad hosts Queen Creek (Ariz.) Casteel; and Lincoln travels to Hawaii to take on Wai’anae.

Cathedral Catholic also plays West Hills Chaminade and San Francisco St. Ignatius.

In addition to the Hawaii trip, Lincoln plays Inglewood, Mission Hills Bishop Alemany, San Bernardino Cajon and Ventura St. Bonaventure.

Eastlake plays Apple Valley and Villa Park while Helix plays Mountain View St. Francis.

With the lack of freshman football teams around the county, several schools are thinking of moving boys JV football games — normally played before Friday varsity games — to Thursday, the slot normally set aside for boys freshman games.

That would clear the Friday spot before the varsity game for girls flag football games.

Schedules may vary widely according to areas and leagues.
