The McKinleyville Community Choir will be performing two concerts this week featuring fun and lively tunes like "Listen to the Music" and "Mockingbird."

The concerts are Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Arcata Presbyterian Church, 670 11th St. in Arcata, and Sunday at 3 p.m. at Azalea Hall, 1620 Pickett Road in McKinleyville.

Friends of Elk River will host a presentation about recovery plans to address decades of unsustainable logging Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Humboldt Grange, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka.

The CalTrout watershed-scale plan will be presented by project manager Katy Gurin, who spent her childhood years in Elk River and has worked on several local projects — from decommissioning the Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant to the county's ongoing Climate Action Plan. Her presentation will include timetables and maps of planned excavation and re-construction.

This free presentation is the fifth of the Elk River Heritage Series, and will include coffee and cookies and an opportunity for questions. Masks are recommended. Dress warmly as windows will be open in the building.

On Saturday at 10 a.m., Redwood National and State Parks will join the national Old Growth Forest Network. The public is invited to a special induction ceremony taking place at the Trillium Falls trailhead, accessed off Davison Road, three miles north of Orick at the Elk Meadow Day Use Area.

The 139,000-acre Redwood National and State Parks — which crosses Del Norte and Humboldt counties — will join more than 200 forests in 34 states across the U.S. that are dedicated to sharing complex and diverse old-growth forests with the people who support them.

The induction ceremony will include brief remarks from representatives from the National Park Service and the Old Growth Forest Network, presentation of a sign and a short guided interpretive hike.

The Old-Growth Forest Network connects people with nature by creating a national network of protected and publicly accessible, mature forests. The network was founded in 2012 by Joan Maloof to identify an old-growth forest in each county of the U.S. that can sustain one, ensure its protection from logging and inform people so that they can explore and experience an old-growth forest. The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Michael Morris at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy-to-walk trails and an opportunity to view a diverse range of shorebirds, migratory songbirds, raptors and resident birds likely engaging in breeding activities.

Friends of the Arcata Marsh will sponsor a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday.

Everyone will meet leader Andy Feinstein at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute, rain-or-shine walk focusing on marsh ecology, local history and/or Arcata's innovative wastewater treatment facility. Masks are strongly recommended inside the building. For more information, call 707-826-2359.

The Henderson Center Merchants Association will host its annual block party Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be free music, hot dogs, booths, games and more. Event proceeds will help Henderson Center raise money for a trolley and other Henderson Center needs.

Participants can also look for "trolley" postcards that will be hidden in participating stores. Everyone who finds a postcard can enter a drawing for 10 different prizes. The public can purchase 50/50 tickets from participating merchants this week and on the day of the event. The winner will receive 50% of the pot, with the other 50% going to the Henderson Center Merchants Association.

Henderson Center is located between D and H streets and Henderson and Harris streets in Eureka. For more information, email [email protected].

The Bureau of Land Management will conduct a free guided hike on the Salmon Pass Trail in Headwaters Forest Reserve Sunday at 10 a.m.

United Bikers of Northern California will present its annual "Bikes By The Bay" event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 19 at Halvorsen Park in Eureka.

In addition to a motorcycle show, there will be vendors offering motorcycle gear, accessories and more; a variety of food trucks; live music; and a beer garden. A motorcycle stunt show is also scheduled.
