During the season, Valley City and Grand Forks Central played five sets total in two matches. Saturday, the two teams played five sets in one match in a thriller in the play-in match to see who would would get into the EDC tournament. In the end, the Hi-Liners would prevail 3-2 to advance. Valley City won 17-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 15-7,
In the opening set, Grand Forks Central ended the set on a 8-2 run after Valley City rallied from a five point deficit to get to within two at 17-15. But the Knights would score the next five points to take a 22-15 lead and go on to win the set 25-17.
In the second set, the Knights led 3-2 early, but then a five point run by Valley City would give the Hi-Liners a 7-3 lead, a lead they would not give up on the way to a convincing 25-14 set win.
The third set was back and forth early with five ties in the first 16 points. After Valley City would tie the set at 8-8, Central would go on a 9-3 run to take a 17-11 lead. The Hi-Liners would get the lead down to two, 21-19, with an 8-4 run. The lead would be two or three points the rest of the way with Central winning the set 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
But Valley City answered in the fourth set. Neither team had more than a three point lead for most of the set and it was tied eight times. The last time came at 17-17 when a Jovi Borg kill started a 9-1 run to end the set. A kill by Kadie Kocka made it 25-18 Valley City.
In the deciding set, it would be close again early with ties at 2,3, 5, and six. A kill by Dacota Potratz tied the set at 6 and started the Hi-Liners on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 14-6 lead. The Knights got one point back on a unforced Hi-Liner error, but then returned the favor, giving the Hi-Liners the set win 15-7 and the match 3-2.
Valley City will be in the EDC tournament for the first time since 2021 and the 29 wins is the most since they had 21 wins in 2018. Valley City, now 19-13, will take on Fargo Davies at Davies on Tuesday, November 12th in the first round of the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament. Central ends the season 8-25.
