Youth football

Football was back at the Mike Shine field Sunday afternoon.

The Warren Dawgs hosted the Port Allegany Gators, with playoff seeding on the line.

The teams would battle it out through the cold rainy afternoon. Warren Dawgs would come away victorious, with a nail biting score of 14-13.

The game would come down to the final play.

Port Allegany started the game with the football and would drive it down to the Dawgs’ 35-yard line. On a third-and-11, Port Allegany’s quarterback found a wide-open running back on a swing pass and took it 35 yards to the house. The point-after was good making it 7-0 Gators. The Dawgs offensively couldn’t get anything going and would punt after a three-and-out. Warren’s defense would get back into form, however, and hold Port Allegany to negative yards on its ensuing possession.

After going back and forth with three-and-outs on both sides, the Dawgs would finally put together a long drive starting at their own 28-yard line. Through a couple of big runs by Emmett Snyder and Lukas Cope, the Dawgs would find themselves at the Port Allegany 2-yard line. From there, Snyder would take it in on a quarterback keeper to bring the score to 7-7 with a Cope PAT conversion. Starting the second half, both teams would battle back and forth defensively, forcing a bunch of three-and-outs. Early in the fourth quarter, Snyder would hit Jacob Sproveri on a third-and-8 for a huge first-down reception. That play would spark an offense that would turn to its workhorse, Jack Abplanalp, for the remainder of the drive. Abplanalp would bulldoze his way to the end zone on a 6-yard TD run and with another successful Cope conversion, it would bring the score to 14-7.

After a quick three-and-out by Port Allegany, the Dawgs looked to score quickly on a 50-yard rushing TD by Snyder. However, a penalty would bring the ball back and the drive would eventually stall out at the Port Allegany 38-yard line with 40 seconds remaining in the game. After a few plays, Port Allegany would find itself at fourth down with 15 seconds left in the game. Going back to the same exact play they scored on earlier in the game, the Gators would capitalize once again bringing the score to 14-13 with 5 seconds left in the game. Port Allegany would decide to go for 2 to get the lead and potential win. Zach Mocny, who was a menace all game long, would prevail once again and come up with a huge quarterback sack to seal the win for the Warren Dawgs.

Defensively, Mocny led the Dawgs with seven tackles and two sacks. Jack Abplanalp had five tackles and a forced fumble. Luke Baxter, Jaxson Boozer, Laine Jackson and Lucas Copley all would contribute four tackles. Lukas Cope had a tackle and a sack, and Jacob Sproveri had two tackles. Evan Wellner added a tackle and fumble recovery. Despite the two big plays by Port Allegany, the Dawgs defense would hold Port Allegany to under a 100 yards of total offense.

Offensively, Snyder would lead the ground game with 85 yards rushing and a TD, while also going 2 for 2 through the air for 21 yards. Jack Abplanalp had a hard 68 yards rushing and a TD. Lukas Cope would run for 47 yards and also convert two PAT attempts. Jack Sproveri had two catches for 21 yards.

The Warren Dawgs improve to 5-0 on the season and have clinched a home playoff game. This Saturday, they will take on Kane (5-0) at 1 p.m. in Kane.
